The Joy of Teaching

Teaching lampshade making and printmaking has been one of the most rewarding parts of my creative life. From the very beginning, I realised there was something about sharing knowledge and seeing someone else’s excitement that truly energises me. I am passionate about making, but teaching adds a whole new layer of meaning. It’s not just about showing a technique; it’s about helping someone find their own confidence, explore their creativity, and discover the satisfaction of making with their own hands.

Over the years, I’ve watched students light up when they grasp a tricky technique or see a design come together exactly as they imagined. I’ve witnessed hesitant beginners transform into confident makers, proud of what they have created. Those moments never get old. They remind me why I started teaching in the first place and why I feel so naturally suited to this role. Guiding someone through a process, problem-solving together, or sharing a little tip that makes everything click is endlessly fulfilling.

One of my favourite parts of teaching is seeing each student bring their own personality and perspective into their work. Every class is different, and every person inspires me in some way. I also love the conversations that happen alongside the making — the shared stories, the laughter, the little discoveries that happen when people immerse themselves in the creative process. Those moments of connection, learning, and pure joy are what make teaching so special.

Teaching is a partnership. I offer my experience, techniques, and guidance, but I also learn from my students. Their ideas, experimentation, and curiosity often spark new approaches in my own work. It’s a constant, dynamic exchange that feeds creativity for both sides. This has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career — the opportunity to nurture creativity, see growth, and celebrate successes together.

For me, teaching is not just something I do; it’s part of who I am as a maker. It allows me to share my passion, connect with others, and help people discover the magic of making themselves. The joy that comes from seeing someone complete a project, solve a problem, or find confidence in their hands is immeasurable. It’s a privilege, and I feel deeply grateful that I get to do this every day.

Until next time,
