WORKSHOP FAQs

Welcome to the Workshop FAQ page! Here, you'll find answers to common questions about my lampshade making & printmaking courses. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, my workshops are designed to suit all skill levels. If you’re looking for more details or have specific queries, feel free to explore the FAQs below or get in touch for a 30 minutes free consultation. I'm here to help you find the perfect course for your learning journey!

What is the learning level for your workshops? All my courses are designed for beginners as well as those with some experience in lampshade making. No prior sewing skills are required, as you will be taught everything you need to know in class. My one-to-one workshops are particularly popular because they can be tailored to your individual skill level and specific needs. You’ll learn at your own pace and receive personalised business advice and trade tips, perfect if you're considering turning your new skills into a business.

What types of lampshades can I learn to make? The extended 5-day courses are designed to give you the flexibility to choose your preferred lampshade style, whether it's hand-stitched or modern card lampshades. A popular option among students is a combination of both techniques, with the primary focus on traditional lampshades. You can dedicate half a day or a full day of the course to mastering advanced card lampshade-making techniques, allowing you to explore and perfect both methods.

Will I receive business advice during the course? Yes, in addition to learning hands-on techniques, I also share my experience in running my businesses. Many students find this valuable, especially if they’re considering turning their newly learned skills into a craft business. Students often bring specific questions based on where they are in their creative journeys, but I’m happy to discuss any topics such as pricing, marketing, selling, branding, and other key aspects to get you started on the right track. I also offer a one-day workshop dedicated to in-depth discussions on pricing, branding, and marketing.

Can I contact you before booking? Yes, I actually recommend having a telephone conversation before booking to go through all your questions, so you can make an informed decision. The 30-minute free consultation, which can be booked via the form at the bottom of this page, allows us to schedule a meeting at a time convenient for both of us. During the Zoom or video call (via WhatsApp or FaceTime), you'll also have the opportunity to take a virtual tour of my studio, where you can see all the lampshades taught on display and we can discuss each one in detail.

How can I find out when your next workshop will be? Most of my courses are one-to-one, offering flexible scheduling to suit you. Just let me know your preferred dates, and I’ll confirm my availability. While the majority of workshops are one-to-one, I occasionally run group sessions. To stay updated on these, be sure to check my website and social media for the latest announcements.

Can I split my 4- or 5-day course into separate sessions? Consecutive days are offered, as this provides a continuous learning experience. However, as my courses are one-to-one, I offer flexibility to suit both my schedule and your personal circumstances. Extended 4- or 5-day courses can be split into different sessions, allowing you to spread the learning over a period that works best for you.

Where are the workshops held? All workshops take place in my Brighton studio, located just a one-hour train ride from London Victoria, followed by a short 15-minute walk from Brighton Station. The exact address will be provided upon booking. For added convenience, direct buses and taxis are also available to the studio.

When do I pay for a course booked with Moji Designs? To secure your spot, full payment is required in advance. Payments can be made via all major credit cards, BACS, or PayPal. As spots are limited, bookings are on a first-come, first-served basis, so early booking is highly recommended.

Will I receive a confirmation of my booking? Yes, upon booking, you’ll receive an email confirming your payment along with a welcome pack that includes all necessary information for your workshop.

Do you provide a receipt for payment? Absolutely! A payment receipt will be sent to you as part of your booking confirmation.

Can I use a gift voucher to pay for a course? Yes, gift vouchers are accepted and can be used towards any course. Gift vouchers are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase.

Do I need to bring a sewing machine to the workshop? I have sewing machines available in the studio. However, you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Some basic machine stitching is involved, particularly for traditional lampshade-making techniques.

What should I bring to the workshop? All tools and materials are provided, so you only need to bring yourself! While many students prefer to bring their own fabric, I also offer a selection for you to choose from. If you bring your own, I recommend medium to lightweight fabrics such as cotton lawn, silk, or linen. Please avoid heavyweight fabrics, nylon, polyester, or any that fray easily. Within seven days of completing your course, you'll receive PDF course notes and workshop images for future reference.

Is there parking available near your studio? Yes, there are both pay-and-display and free street parking options available near my studio.

What information will I receive if I’m traveling from abroad? As many of my students travel from abroad to attend my courses, I provide an information pack with details on the logistics of traveling to the UK. This includes information on airports, train connections, and other transportation options. Additionally, I provide a list of recommended accommodation options, so you can check availability before booking your course.

What techniques are offered during the printmaking sessions? During the printmaking courses, you can explore linocut printing or Indian block printing using traditional wooden blocks. Both techniques offer unique approaches to creating beautiful, hand-printed designs.

What type of ink is used in the printmaking sessions? All inks used during the printmaking sessions are eco-friendly, water-based inks, ensuring a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to your artwork.

What do I need to bring with me? All tools and materials are provided for the printmaking sessions. You only need to bring yourself! If you'd like to use your own fabric or paper for printing, feel free to bring those along. Otherwise, I have a selection available for you to choose from.

Do I need to bring my own lunch? A light lunch is provided for one-to-one sessions. If you have any dietary requirements or preferences, please inform me ahead of time, so I can accommodate you.
