Learning to Let Go

Learning to let go has been one of the hardest but most rewarding lessons in my creative life. When I first began teaching and making, I was attached to every detail. I wanted everything to be precise and as I imagined. Over time, I realised that holding too tightly often blocked creativity and made the process feel stressful.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means trusting the journey and embracing imperfection. A lampshade may not match the image I had in my mind, a print might develop unexpected marks, or a project might shift direction entirely. Accepting these moments as part of the creative process has been liberating.

I often encourage students to experiment and take risks. When we release control, creativity flows more freely, and surprising, beautiful results often emerge. Some of my most rewarding experiences in the studio have come from embracing the unexpected and seeing where it leads. Letting go is not losing control; it is opening yourself to discovery.

Until next time,
