Embracing the Ups and Downs

Embracing the Ups and Downs

A creative life is full of highs and lows. Some days, ideas flow effortlessly, and the work seems to unfold naturally. Other days, progress is slow, inspiration feels distant, and frustration creeps in. I have found these moments particularly challenging at times, especially because as a maker and teacher, I wear so many hats. I am creating, teaching, managing the studio, running the business, responding to emails, and thinking ahead to new projects. Juggling all of this can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to lose momentum or feel drained.

Over my years of teaching and running a creative business, I have watched students experience the same rhythm. Some moments are thrilling, others are difficult, but both teach lessons and shape us as makers. I have learned to welcome the low points rather than resist them. Often, the challenges give clarity, push me to try new approaches, and strengthen problem-solving skills. I remind myself that feeling stretched does not mean I am failing; it simply reflects the reality of creative work.

Celebrating the highs is important, but so is patience and self-compassion during the lows. Embracing the full spectrum of experiences allows us to remain resilient and connected to our creativity. By honouring both, we can enjoy the satisfaction of making and understand that even the challenging days, while tough, contribute to growth, discovery, and a deeper appreciation for the work we love.

Until next time,
