Create Seamless Patterns from Your Hand-Drawn or Digital Designs
Ready to take your hand-drawn artwork and turn it into beautiful, seamless patterns? This one-day workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to refine their design skills. Whether you’re a graphic designer, an artist, or simply passionate about creating patterns, this course will give you the essential techniques to transform your designs into repeatable patterns ready for any project—be it fabric, wallpaper, stationery, or more.
In this hands-on, easy-to-follow workshop, I’ll guide you step by step through the process of creating professional seamless patterns, using just the tools you need to succeed. You don’t need advanced software skills or previous experience—this course is designed to take the fear out of pattern making and provide you with the skills to start right away. By the end of the day, you’ll feel confident creating seamless patterns from your artwork, even if you’re new to design software.
What’s Included:
Choice of Three Options for Creating Your Pattern: Hand-Carved, Photoshop, or Procreate
Option 1: Hand-Carved Pattern
Create a simple design and turn it into a seamless pattern. I’ll guide you through laying out and refining the repeat manually. Once your pattern is ready, you’ll transfer it onto a lino block, carve it, and print your design either on paper or on fabric, depending on your preference. This option is ideal if you enjoy hands-on making and want to experience the full process from drawing to hand-printed results.
Option 2: Photoshop Digital Workflow
Creating Designs & Motifs: Use any hand-drawn artwork (line drawing, watercolour, gouache, or mixed media). I’ll show you how to digitise it and prepare it for Photoshop.
Scanning and Importing: Learn how to scan or photograph your artwork, import it into Photoshop, and convert it into clean, high-resolution files.
Enhancing and Cleaning: Use Photoshop tools to clean up lines, adjust colours, remove background noise, and prepare your design for tiling.
Pattern Testing & Finalising: Create seamless repeats, test your pattern, adjust spacing and scale, and export your final design ready for fabric, stationery, wallpaper, or other projects.
This workflow is perfect if you prefer a professional software setup and want full control over refining and adjusting your patterns digitally.
Option 3: Procreate Seamless Pattern Workflow
Sketching & Digitising: Create your artwork directly in Procreate on your iPad. Learn how to make sketches that are easy to tile.
Tileable Layouts: Transform your design into a perfectly repeatable tile using Procreate’s pattern templates, layer, and transform tools.
Refining & Colouring: Clean up lines, add colour, and experiment with textures while keeping the repeat seamless.
Pattern Testing & Export: Test your repeat within Procreate, adjust scale or alignment, and export your pattern ready for digital products or printing.
This option is perfect if you want a fully digital workflow in a tactile, intuitive environment, without the need for scanning or Photoshop.
